This walkthrough will show you the steps to take if you, or your student(s), are unable to use your camera or mic while on a Google Meet. If you, or your students, are already blocked, jump to these instructions.
The very first time you enter a Google Meet, you will be prompted to allow Meet to use your camera and mic. The prompt will look something like this:
If you select Allow, from that point forward the camera (or mic, depending on the prompt) will grant access for Meet. Which means Meet will have access to those components unless you change the permissions later. However, if you click on Block, it will block it forever, unless you change the permissions.
To change permissions and allow Google Meet to use your Camera and Mic
To the left of the website URL, click the lock icon
A pop up will appear with multiple options
If Camera and/or Mic show Block, we will need to change it to Allow. Both components have their own drop down, and each will need to be changed in order to grant access to each of the Camera and Mic. The drop down looks like this when selected
After you grant access (Allow) the Camera and Mic access with Google Meet, you will not need to change the permissions moving forward. However, in some cases you may need to refresh your web page in order for the permissions to take effect:
- Click on the refresh icon on your browser
- On Chromebook you can click on the refresh button ( )
- Or, on Macbook you hold down Command (
)and Shift, then click R.
